How exciting to hear of your mission and work with the students in Africa, Verne! I have read very little about the badging trend, but find it fascinating. I can see areas where it could be used effectively in so many environments including education. It sounds like you are interested in using digital badges as an incentive for participation in learning activities and achievement, which seems to be the broadest use in k-12 education according to Ahn, Pellicone, & Butler in Open Badges for Education (2014). Do you see that some recognition for employment or further education might develop from your use of badging as well? I would think that the possibilities could be far-reaching for students with little or no access to traditional education systems and/or curriculum.
I look forward to seeing what we learn about digital badging for achievement and certification of learning and how the concept of badging develops. The Horizon Report discusses some uses of badging for tracking learning, recognizing achievements, and nurturing extended engagement by students and for certifying professional development for teachers. The use of badges in these areas could be a tremendous change from grade-based and seat time evaluations for students and teachers alike. I look forward to hearing more from you as we learn together through this course, Verne.

Thanks for your great comments. I think digital badging should be used in Africa for employment applications, job leaning and advancement and personal development in a company or work frame. It has unlimited applications to those with limited access to education. Its not what we learn but what we can do that applies to future learning and development of the person.
